Department of Internal Medicine

General Information

The Department of Internal Medicine at Aksaray University Faculty of Medicine was established by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Kor, Asst. Prof. Dr. Hazen Sarıtaş, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Selman Gencer, and is authorized to provide residency training in internal medicine. In 2025, an educational program in Rheumatology was launched by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Kor and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Erkut Önder, granting authorization to train subspecialty fellows in rheumatology.

Our department’s mission is to train internal medicine specialists who are equipped to manage acute and chronic complex multisystem diseases holistically—addressing physical, psychological, and social dimensions. We aim to cultivate professionals who are competent in service delivery, education, and research, with strong leadership and teamwork skills. The educational program for medical students, residents, and subspecialty fellows is based on a multidisciplinary structure involving Internal Medicine, Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology, Pulmonology, Cardiology, and related subspecialties.

Residency Training Program

Residents are admitted twice a year through the Medical Specialization Exam (TUS) and Subspecialty Exam (YDUS). The duration of residency training is 4 years for internal medicine and 3 years for subspecialty training. Before starting, residents participate in an orientation program.

  • Year 1: Residents work in inpatient wards and the Internal Medicine Intensive Care Unit, taking shifts every 3–4 days.

  • Year 2: After passing a mid-level exam, residents rotate through outpatient clinics affiliated with internal medicine subspecialties, with shifts every 5 days.

  • Year 3: Senior residents spend 1 month in the Intensive Care Unit and the remaining months in various internal medicine wards, with shifts every 6 days.

  • Year 4: Residents rotate through the Emergency Clinic and external consultations for 1 month each, and continue in outpatient clinics for the rest of the year.

Throughout the 4 years, residents complete rotations in Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology, Pulmonology, Cardiology, and Radiology. Weekly lectures are held by faculty members, and guest lectures are organized monthly. During clinical rotations, residents participate in weekly and monthly journal clubs and seminars with consultants and specialists. Upon completing their thesis and passing the final exam, residents earn the title of Internal Medicine Specialist.
