General Information
The Department of Cardiology at Aksaray University Faculty of Medicine was established to provide education and healthcare services for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cardiovascular diseases, based on scientific principles. By utilizing all the possibilities of modern medicine, the department has quickly become a prominent reference center in Aksaray and surrounding provinces. It is committed to delivering high-standard healthcare services to the public in both academic and clinical domains.
Education and Research Activities
The department offers undergraduate education in basic and clinical cardiology to medical students, while also training physicians through its residency program. The educational process is supported by theoretical courses, case discussions, clinical practice, seminars, and scientific research. The goal is to train physicians and academics who possess knowledge, skills, and ethical values across all areas of cardiology and who embrace evidence-based medicine. Special emphasis is placed on developing students’ and residents’ scientific thinking skills, encouraging innovative projects, and contributing to the advancement of contemporary medicine.
Healthcare Services Provided
The department operates a coronary intensive care unit and cardiology ward located in the main hospital building, alongside the emergency department and operating rooms. The coronary intensive care unit is a secondary-level facility with 12 fully equipped beds. The cardiology ward includes one private room and several double rooms, totaling 24 beds. An echocardiography (ECHO) room is also available within the intensive care unit.
There are two angiography units. The coronary and interventional cardiology laboratories are integrated with the emergency department and operating rooms. These labs use advanced Siemens angiography systems and collaborate with Interventional Neurology and Cardiovascular Surgery departments when needed. Procedures performed include coronary angiography, IVUS and FFR, cardiac catheterization, percutaneous coronary interventions (balloon, stent, CTO, etc.), peripheral and cerebral vascular interventions, and percutaneous treatments for adult congenital heart diseases (e.g., ASD). The labs are available 24/7 for emergency primary percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI).
The electrophysiology laboratory will soon be operational, where permanent pacemaker and ICD implantations are performed.
Cardiology outpatient clinics are located on the ground floor of the hospital and include general cardiology and arrhythmia-Holter clinics. There are six outpatient rooms, each equipped with echocardiography devices, and two exercise testing units are available.
Scientific Studies and Academic Activities
Faculty members of the Department of Cardiology maintain academic productivity through numerous national and international publications, conference presentations, and articles. The department actively participates in research projects supported by Aksaray University Scientific Research Projects (BAP) and TÜBİTAK, conducting innovative studies aimed at the early diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Annual scientific meetings, case discussions, and workshops support the academic development of both students and residents.
Academic Staff
The department consists of an experienced team including 2 professors, 3 associate professors, 7 specialists, and 3 research assistants. The team provides education, research, and clinical services in interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, heart failure, cardiac imaging, and preventive cardiology through a comprehensive approach.
