General Introduction and Purpose of Establishment
The Department of Medical Pharmacology at Aksaray University Faculty of Medicine was established in 2019 and has been actively engaged in education, research, and community service. The department is chaired by Asst. Prof. Dr. Erdem Arslan. The academic staff also includes Asst. Prof. Dr. Fatih Berktaş. Both faculty members integrate their expertise in pharmacology with medical education and scientific research.
Educational and Research Activities
As part of the Internal Medical Sciences division, the Department of Medical Pharmacology is responsible for the “Medical Pharmacology” courses in the 3rd year of the medical curriculum, the “Professional Skills Training” course in the 2nd year, the elective “Animal Experiments” course in the 3rd year, and the “Clinical Pharmacology” internship program for 5th-year students. The educational program aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of drug mechanisms, therapeutic uses, side effects, and principles of rational drug use. The department also supports pharmacology education across various faculties within the university.
In terms of research, the department focuses on neuroscience using experimental models—particularly investigating neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, neurodegeneration, and neuroprotection mechanisms in laboratory animals. These studies explore the effects of pharmacological agents on the nervous system at molecular, biochemical, and behavioral levels. Additionally, research is conducted in the fields of rational drug use and pharmacovigilance.
