General Introduction and Purpose of Establishment
Genetics is a scientific discipline that studies the structure and function of the genome, inheritance patterns, and the interactions between organisms and their environments. Medical Genetics focuses on the causes and inheritance of genetic disorders and hereditary diseases, applying diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive approaches through multidisciplinary education and research.
The Department of Medical Genetics at Aksaray University Faculty of Medicine was established to meet emerging needs in this field and to contribute to scientific advancement through research and development.
Educational Activities
Our department provides both theoretical and practical education in Medical Genetics to undergraduate and postgraduate students in the Faculty of Medicine and other health sciences programs.
Service Areas
The department’s service areas include cytogenetics, molecular cytogenetics, cancer genetics, molecular genetics, prenatal diagnosis, pharmacogenetics, genetic counseling, and educational and research activities at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Routine laboratory services will commence once the necessary technical and physical infrastructure is fully established.
Research and Scientific Activities
Research conducted in our department covers a wide range of topics including cytogenetics, molecular cytogenetics, cancer genetics, molecular genetics, prenatal diagnosis, pharmacogenetics, epigenetics, sports genetics, nutrigenetics, and genetic studies related to exercise, diet, and food intolerance. We investigate the diagnosis and phenotypic implications of common and rare diseases caused by pathogenic genetic variants, identify genes associated with increased risk for conditions such as ADHD spectrum disorders, diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular diseases, and study environmental influences on gene expression.
Advanced methodologies such as Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS), multivariate analyses, epigenetics, and proteomics are employed to develop early diagnosis and treatment strategies.
Our department actively participates in numerous national and international research projects, including TÜBİTAK-funded studies, collaborations with other universities, BAP projects, initiatives supported by the Turkish Society of Medical Oncology, European Union-funded programs, and projects conducted within Technopol Istanbul, Turkey’s largest health technopark.
Faculty members serve on editorial boards and scientific advisory committees of various national and international journals and contribute to high-impact publications, conferences, and symposiums.
